Eumundi: Still Green, But Bigger and Better

Eumundi Green became a fully community-owned publication from issue 87 of 21 January 2010 in a move to secure the future of a much-loved local magazine and to expand its circulation.

Sue Langdon, Director for marketing with the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Ltd. (ECCO), announced the move at a meeting of community representatives in Eumundi.
The meeting was attended by a large community crowd and included Glen Elmes, Member for Noosa, Peter Wellington, Member for Nicklin, and Councillor Paul Tatton, Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

"Eumundi Green has become an essential part of our landscape in the 86 issues published since its inception on 4 July 2006," said Ms Langdon. "Until now, it has been owned by Eumundi residents, John and Joyce Turnbull. While both John and Joyce want to stay involved with Eumundi Green, they as two retired individuals cannot guarantee a permanent future for it. To provide that certainty, and to make the Green a truly community vehicle, ECCO will take over ownership of the magazine on behalf of the community from Friday, December 18.

"I am happy to announce that Joyce Turnbull has agreed to continue as managing editor of Eumundi Green. We have arrangements in place to make sure that the 150 advertisers who have been the backbone of the Green continue to have Joyce's support." Ms Turnbull will be paid a small wage but Eumundi Green will continue to rely on a significant level of volunteering from the Turnbulls and the dozens of other Eumundi Green enthusiasts. "Without the writers, collators and distributors who generously give their time to the magazine every fortnight, it would not be able to continue," Ms Langdon said. "I would like to thank each of them for this immensely valuable community service and hope that they will continue their community support in the years ahead."

ECCO was set up jointly by the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce, the Eumundi Historical Association and the Eumundi District Community Association in November 2008 as a community development organisation for Eumundi. Its main function until now has been to manage car parking for the Eumundi markets. Income from this has allowed it to buy a community bus, plan for the beautification of the main street, and to start work on a marketing campaign to promote Eumundi to the wider world.

Ms Turnbull said she was delighted about the move as it would allow her time, and provide her with support, to introduce long-planned improvements to Eumundi Green.

"We will expand the magazine from 20 pages to 24 from the first issue in 2010, we have a number of new features planned and we're also going to increase the number of copies. There will be a 5% rise in advertising rates, the first since the magazine's inception, to fund this and to pay Joyce. Every visitor who comes to the Eumundi car park will be offered a copy and it will be delivered to neighbouring towns and the Noosa Information Centre, all to promote the Eumundi experience.

"John and I love this magazine and we are excited to know that the community is supporting it so strongly. We will continue to put our hearts and souls into making it a success."

Ms Langdon said Eumundi Green would continue to be the community magazine that everyone loved and counted on but it would also promote Eumundi to the wider region.
